RIM’s (doomed?) BlackBerry Magnum makes its video debut

The same cat that brought us the last Magnum scoop is back again, this time with a short video detailing the differences between RIM’s supposed first effort at making a touchscreen / QWERTY hybrid device and its nearest cousins, the Bold 9000 and 9700. Notably, the narrator points out that the phone shares its keyboard design more closely with the 9000 than the 9700 — for aficionados, this can be a crucial difference — and it generally shares its physical cues with the older Bold apart from a move to micro-USB (and the SurePress screen, of course). Sadly, the proto here lacks an operating system so there’s not terribly much to see beyond the hardware itself, but it might all be for naught — the latest intel suggests that this phone has been supplanted by a mysterious “Dakota” with updated specs, so we’ll just have to hang on to our Curves and Storms for a little while longer. Follow the break for the full video.

RIM teases on Facebook, BlackBerry Tour 9650 release imminent

CrackBerry caught a quick screen shot of the BlackBerry Facebook account attempting to… actually, to be honest, we’re not sure what exactly they are trying to do. The post has been removed, but it read: “The BlackBerry Tour 9650 is…

Unannounced BlackBerry Curve 8910 took CES refuge at Case-Mate’s booth?

RIM has an interesting reputation in the trade show world: it rarely makes any announcements of interest or consequence during events, but if you look hard enough, you still might just find something juicy. Last year’s CES, for example, briefly saw a Curve 8900 mysteriously running AT&T-branded firmware, which we now know foretold a release several months later. This year’s shindig in Vegas proved to be a little less bombastic — or so we thought, anyway, until a dude cleaning out his camera’s memory card noticed that Case-Mate (of all companies) allegedly had an unannounced Curve 8910 chilling in its booth. It’s pretty common for manufacturers to give valued accessory partners some prototypes ahead of time to make sure there are plenty of add-ons available by the time a device is released, they just don’t usually… you know, put those prototypes out at a booth for everyone to enjoy. We actually stopped by Case-Mate this year and didn’t catch the 8910, but we don’t know how long it was actually out — and besides, telling the difference between this and a Bold 9700 takes a Mike Lazaridis-like understanding for the subtle differences in RIM’s industrial design. Next year, though, be on notice, guys: we’ll be scanning your kiosks with a fine-tooth comb.

Motorola files a complaint against RIM with the International Trade Commission

How would you change RIM’s BlackBerry Storm2?

It’s sort of stunning how many stellar smartphone options Verizon Wireless customers suddenly have, but lest we forget that RIM’s hotly-anticipated Storm2 was rockin’ the suburbs late last year. For those who sprung, we’re curious to know if you’re happy with your decision. Do you think RIM adequately addressed the gripes from round one? Is the display responsive enough? Was the addition of WiFi what sealed the deal? Are you annoyed that you didn’t hold out for the new Palm lineup? Feel free to get really real in comments below — we get the impression that Waterloo needs all the feedback it can get when it comes to QWERTY-less mobiles.

Motorola asks ITC to ban BlackBerry imports

It’s been a hell of a year for Motorola, but one thing’s stayed the same: the company still thinks RIM is ripping off some of its patents. At least that’s the sense we’re getting from a new complaint Moto’s just filed with the International Trade Commission alleging the BlackBerry crew is infringing five patents on “early-stage innovations” that range across WiFi, app management, UI, and power management. As per usual with ITC complaints, Motorola’s asking for a ban on RIM imports — we’d imagine a cross-complaint from RIM barring Motorola imports is coming soon. Also spotted: lawyers gleefully dancing in the streets dressed only in loinclothes made from money.

BlackBerry Magnum prototype spotted, canned in favor of something better?

Okay, before we get too far here, keep your excitement in check: you’ll apparently never be able to buy this. The good news, though, is that CrackBerry seems to have it on authority that the phone you’re looking at here — an early Magnum prototype — has been scrapped in favor of something better, the “Dakota,” possibly a stealthy tribute to diehard BlackBerry user Dakota Fanning. In all seriousness, though, both devices are centered around the concept that you’d have a touchscreen up top, a traditional Bold-style keyboard down below, and scrap the trackball / optical pad altogether — a new concept for RIM. Differences between the Magnum and Dakota are a little hazier, but one notable change is apparently a move to liquid lens tech for the camera; considering how much these guys innovated (or over-innovated) with SurePress, we wouldn’t be surprised. Prototype BlackBerrys have a tendency to leak like an old faucet, so we sure it won’t be long until we get some more intel on these bad boys.
